So c'mon then...

Now Azz has kindly put the new section up, what're we all interested in, how do we work our dogs?

Satch is currently doing some very basic agility - we're hoping to get into mondio as soon as this building work's out of the way.

My only experience with tracking has been with police dogs, specifically cadaver dogs (sorry )

Hi Emm,

Mondio (mondioring) is a sort of combined dog sport which encompasses three categories: obedience, agility (jumps) and protection work.

The whole point of the sport is to develop a high level of obdience, in particular, control of the dog in all circumstances. When competing in mondio, the dog has no collar or leash on at any time except during the heel on leash and no food rewards are allowed at any time while competing. Points for an exercise are lost for multiple commands, incorrect commands, or failure of the dog or handler to perform the exercise correctly. There is a 1 second leeway on the outs before the dog is penalized for being slow to out. Control is emphasized from the moment the dog/handler team walks onto the field, until they leave at the end. Mondio Ring consists of a number of exercises:

Heel on leash
Heel off leash
Absence (one minute, down for Brevet, sit or down for other levels)
Food refusal
Send out
Thrown Retrieve
Positions
Object Search (small wood dowel - scent discrimination)
Palissade (jumps)
Hurdle
Long Jump
Flee attack
face-on attack
Defense of Handler
Search and Escort
Stop Attack (Flee)
Guard of Object

Pallisades go up to 2.30m, long jumps are up to 4m and hurdles go up to 1.20m.

Hope some of this is interesting

that sounds great one of my dogs I know would really enjoy something like that - I'm not a very good trainer though still learning a lot - are you doing this just now with your dogs?

No, not at the moment. Hardly getting to do training at all at the moment. I try to get to the local club frequently just to watch.

I've done a fair bit of Schutzhund before, but I prefer mondio as it's more of an all-round sport - a bit like a three day event for horses

No, they have to put up one paw and say, clearly, "Not for me thanks, I had a biscuit earlier - I only have to look at kibble and it goes straight to my hips"
