We've had the quote through for removing the lump on Monty's head and it ain't pretty. It would need to be done by a specialist and based on his medical history and pictures they have seen they are estimated £3000

The quote covers removing the lump, re-structuring the skin on his head and bringing skin up from other area's and upto 5 days in a dog hospital to be able to monitor and drain any excess fluids.

I'm at a complete loss of what to do, in an ideal world insurance will pay out but the vet is suggesting they won't as he's had the patches since birth and they've developed into a lump over time. We never declared them to the insurance as a pup as we were told they were birthmark type patches and nothing untoward.

The vet is also telling us that we could leave the lump but there is a good chance it will continue to grow or cause him problems later in life so he is advising we have it removed as soon as possible but if insurance say no then I just don't know how we'll find the money.

My mentality says that we could leave it and see what happens but if it does get worse and we have to have it removed then next year it could cost £4000 or more because of growth etc.

At the moment i want to see if insurance will pay out for the biopsy he had done to diagnose as if they pay for that then technically they should pay for the treatment that has been advised as a result of that but knowing insurance companies (and my luck) they won't.

I just don't know what to do. I'm sat trying to work out what we could sell in the house to raise the funds or whether we could afford to borrow the money if needs be.

Sorry for the long rambling post and sorry if it doesn't make much sense, i'm just in a bit of shock at the cost and now worrying about what to do.

I feel like I have to do whatever it takes to get him that op as i feel like i've neglected him by not insisting something was done sooner or not thinking myself that it was more than just a birthmark type lump.
Sorry to read this hun, but ring the insurance company once you have read the notes.

I know of someone that took a puppy with HD, and thier insurance paid up when he was 2 as he had major surgery. So at least speak to them.

If you have any problems, I am sure alot of us will help in any way ie fundraising. I will anyway.

Love and kisses to my boy and hugs to you hun xxxxxx

Mate, don't feel bad. You're under alot of stress and worry with this so it's understandable that you might misinterpret people's posts, especially if they haven't taken care in how they've typed it out.

sorry to hear this hun, give the insurance company a ring and take it from there once you have the notes.
As has been said if we can do anything to help to raise funds I've got loads of doggy stuff I've bought and not used, we could do a doggy auction or something and see how much we can raise. Big hugs to you xxx

Hi Esme,

Shona is right in total we have paid £4730 to date (well not us but the insurance) but that includes ALL the treatment Ben has had including accupuncture, Hydrotherapy and Physio.

I don't want to say anything at all to give you a thread of false hope but the original quote we got from the specialist was £3300 - £4000 for the op and hospital stay as well as the emergency consultation and emergency op (all on a bank holiday Monday) I have just dug out the bill and for his op and hospitalisation (from the Monday to the following Wednesday) it was £2850 and Ben was in theatre from 2pm until just after 9pm we obviously had to add the vets fees (our own vets and the 2 emergency vets fees to that) but all in all for the work that was carried out I was impressed. I don't know if thi s may have been because it was carried out at a vet teaching hospital? Is that a possibility for Monty?

Do not worry about it being a teaching hospital as Shona will tell you I was on the phone to her for hours in tears because Ben was essentially a guinea pig! But as Shona correctly pointed out the guy who does the ops is one of the best, he is teaching others and they observe so they do the after care etc but he does the surgery and of course they are all so keen to impress its like 5 star treatment and I can honestly say that was correct.

I know with Ben he was an interesting case and it would certainly be that with Monty so it might be worth finding that out and also when we took Ben home the Insurance hadn't yet agreed to pay and they just gave us an invoice and said if there was a prob with the insurance then call to arrange a suitable payment plan. So hopefully another option for you there too.

Obviously I hope and pray that the Insurance covers this Maybe a letter from the vet to say they indicated it was a birth mark and nothing more sinister and a maybe a letter from anyone else who heard the vet say this Rich? A friend? Your parents? Richs parents?

Fingers crossed for you x

So sorry to hear all of this. When Indi, my lurcher was very ill, the insurance company didn't pay up, BUT the vets and specialist explained if I went ahead with the tests and surgery they would sort a payment plan out for me. As it turned out we didn't get to go down that road as Indi deteriorated so much we had to make the dreadful and painful decision to have him PTS.
I think you will find most vets and vet hosptals will help with some sort of plan.
I really hope you can sort something out, but it would be great if the insurance company did pay out.

Hugs to you and Monty xxx

Thanks Steph, it means a lot to me that so many people have said they'd put money in if we chose to raise funds.

I've got my argument all laid out for the insurance if I should need it but hopefully it won't come to that.

Again thanks for this, it means a lot to me that so many have said they would help out. I spoke with insurance this morning to see how they were getting on with the claim for his biopsy but they said it takes 3-4 weeks to process. I'm waiting to see the outcome of this claim as i think that if they pay for the biopsy then they should pay for the surgery that is advised based on the diagnosis.

If anyone could offer advice on whether thats likely it would be appreciated!

Thank you for the advice and I will certainly look into the teaching hospital. I think it would probably be seen as an interesting case as the last two vets he's seen have shown more interest than all the others put together.

I'm going to ring the breeder and ask her to get a copy of the notes from her vet who saw Monty when he was 2 days old and then again when he was 4 weeks old. He also did both Monty's jabs so saw him a fair bit and he put it down as a birthmark type thing. Hopefully that should help to convince insurance that we could never have known that it would get to this.

I didn't realise vets did payment plans so we will definitely ask about this if insurance say no.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your dog, I can't imagine how hard it must be to make that decision. I don't even like to think about having to make it.

ooo I forgot to say, when our last boxer della broke her leg, we weren't insured and the op was gonna be £1000, we didn't have the money but the vet said we could do a payment plan and pay monthly. you could have a word with the specialist if you get no joy from the insurance
We were lucky that my hubbys Auntie phoned the vets and paid £400 for us without us knowing and the op worked out cheaper so we didn't have to do the payment plan in the end.
thinking of you hun, you must be so stressed out thinking about stuff. try not to worry hun xx
