Maybe I'm odd, but £500 - £700 seems about right for any well raised puppy to me. Giving enough to compensate for a really good birthing pen, heat lamps, injections, socialising etc. I'd be suspicious of a set up that asked any less. Pharaoh was only £50 or so, he came from a working farm where he and his family were used to hunt rabbits and rats. The farmer was working on breeding the perfect lurcher and had a lot of 'not there yet' puppies to sell. No fancy birthing room for him and he came complete with no injections and many parasites because of it. So bad in fact they nearly killed him and he ended up costing me £500 in vet bills not long after I got him. I was happy to pay a bit more and get a much healthier puppy with Kismet.

Breed of dog hasn't been influenced by my budget, I can always do something or sell something to find £600 for a pup, but how many definitely is. Three lots of insurance is all I can currently afford, but I'd love to have more dogs.

I'd say no.

Im on a relatively low income comparitively to the average i suppose. But my breed (pugs) are very expensive, upwards of £1200 for a nice, show quality pug. But, i always believe that if you really want something you should save and save and get it when you can. I read the thread about the payments for dogs and chose not to reply as i just think its awful. I wouldnt think its good for the dog, people would impulse buy without thinking about it properly.

I wouldnt buy any dog, expensive or not, without knowing that i had enough to buy the dog outright and have enough each month to pay insurance (or put aside for vets bills if thats what you choose to do).

Only ever had rescues,...... not a money issue, just a case of lets see what there is and there is always a dog that needs us

A friend of mine lost here Dobie who had had numerous trips to the vet and had cost a fortune. When the vet asked if she was going to get another, her hubby piped up "no I'm getting a Mercedes instead"

I would only consider rescues, we paid the rescue that Brinley came from £150 and Betty was free as the vet was looking for a home for her and phoned us.There are some dogs that I am fond of I love Boxers, Labradors and like the look of Pugs, but I wouldn't buy one so I will always get a rescue dog, and see whats available and go on instinct like I did with Brinley, and Betty.

Cracking post by claire and daisy

I don't necessarily think income reflects breed, but more personality and to some degree lifestyle unfortunately. How often does one come across working/high energy breeds which are kept on a rather one sided basis ie. insufficient exercise and stimulation etc. but hey, don't they look good! So, maybe a wee bit of some kind of aspiration comes into it. I have also come across many well to do folks who are great supporters of the cross breed or rescue dog, these are people who quite simply like and enjoy dogs, and there is myself - a fan of the gsd and jrt and fond of other breeds and crosses - income just doesn't come into the equation, but I think most certainly personality does.

A lot of people see my dallies and say 'oh they're expensive aren't they?'
I think people see them and think I must be well off but in reality, one was a 'free' rescue dog - the other was a very one off payment for my 18th birthday present (I was in control of where, who, which dog etc, they just paid for her for my birthday).

I don't think the breed does give an indication to income but I do make assumptions on lifestyle when I see people and their dogs, and I agree with Moobli - your lifestyle should affect your breed.

Although, I don't have a typical lifestyle for owning dallies...

i own four staffordshire bull terriers, if i have the room, then i will always find the money to give my dogs a comfortable life, like someone said earlier fresh air is free, and i am out walking twice sometimes three times a day, as my dogs are at there happiest when they are running free.
On a sunday they will have a family roast complete with yorkshire puddings and one day in the week they will have stew with a dumpling each. I would give my last pound to make sure my dogs are happy, i also pay about £20.00 a week in treats like bones etc.
