Carrying on from another thread what would you consider is the best age to breed your dog for the first time?

Our Breed Clubs recommend 18 months to 2 years,I myself think 2 years is more acceptable.

No earlier than the third season and no later than 3 but that does change with breeds with special requirements such as those who develop late.

Think the idea is on the third season the bitch is young and mature the pelvic ares still supple so the carrying and birth is as nature intended, any later and the pelvis may be set and there may be more problem in the carrying and whelping.

Not before 20mths in smaller breeds and at the very least 2yrs in larger breeds.

I would say at least 2 years old, especially for large breeds. (Of course, this has to conform with the relevant health testing, temperament and for the true benefit of a breed).

In toy breeds I understand it is okay to breed a bitch that has had two seasons and is over 14 months, so long as all relevant health tests, etc., are carried out. Don't know about large breeds.
