HD In young lab

Hi Folks

My friend has had her young lab (7months old) back and forward to the vet thelast couple of weeks and she has been told this week that he has HD and it is really bad in one hip......he needs to have an operation, however this might not be covered by their insurance as they mention when he was about 14 weeks old to their old vet (they changed practise because of poor service) that they thought he walked funny......the new vet as reffered them to St Monan's Vet hosp? and he will have one hip done at a cost of......£1500 to be paid up front if you please!

They are gutted......poor wee soul is soo young...and then they might have to go thru the whole thing again with the other hip which the vet is going to keep an eye on!

Has your friend changed insurance policy since the pup was 14 weeks Or only the vet

If I change Stars policy, I wont be covered for her heart as it is a pre-existing condition. Not sure if your friend is in the same position.

Hi Carole

They have had him insured since he was 8-10 weeks old, but from day one thay have said to their old vet that they thought something was not right with his hip.......the old vet has written "owner has expressed concern over hips" on the pups records....and the new vet thinks that the insurance firm might think that the only reason that they got him insured was cause his hips are perhaps not right....but they have asked for a claim form anyway and will wait to see if insurance allow the claim....

I see now. Not sure of the position on that one.

I think our policy did not cover any new illnesses for the first 28 days (will need to check to be sure).

When was HD diagnosed?

What a shame . I have no experience with HD, so dont know anything about it.

Maybe someone else who has had dealings with insurance might be able to help.

I feel very sorry for the poor pup, and the owners. Much pain, discomfort and worry to go through, plus, of course, the expense.

It does highlight the importance of buying from reputable breeders who carry out all the health checks necessary for their breed and who have a sound knowledge of the lines from which they are breeding.
