No reaction from Kodi, nor to fireworks. He just carries on regardless. Now should I turn the vacuum cleaner on, all hell breaks loose.

We had a terrific thunderstorm a few evenings ago. It started off with loud claps of thunder and vivid flashes of lightening. Both Georgina and Gwylim were fast asleep on the driveway and neither of them woke up and came inside until it started to pour with rain. They both climbed onto the sofa and promptly went to sleep again!

My collie, who died today, was totally thunder and gunshot phobic. Knowing her past and the local Irish belief that you must never let a dog in the house when there is thunder... One storm that lasted three days years ago saw her prostate and vomiting. Vet refused to see her as it was "behavioural" and they will not prescribe for that here. I kept her alive with rehydration fluid. Another time I was out when thunder hit. She broke down a door and damaged another trying to find me and it was eleven days before she came home. Terror in canine form and nothing helped. After we came here, I realised that she would only react if she saw me. I checked a US collie site and she was typical and way past any desensitising. It was pitiful to see her.

I'm wondering if dogs born within a good socialisation period and outside a fear period fare better than others
Oh probably. Collie would have been taken from her mother very young and the man who was given her did not want her and never spent a night in that house for the five years he lived. Collie was alone every night from teatime until after breakfast, locked in a dark shed. Small wonder she was an emotional mess.

So sorry Rosebud. I hope Collie dog passed peacefully and is now running free and carefree at the bridge while he waits.

Another star shining down brightly xx

Thanks... she fell asleep and looked so peaceful. A gentle old girl who had a hard life. Left a great hole though..

Rosie absolutely hates thunder, lightning and fireworks. Her birthday is in December. Then to be honest she hates all loud bangs and noises. Bless her, she is a collie/whippet cross. The Hoover she tries to attack
