Should the dog sit when you stop walking?

In competitive obedience should the dog sit when you stop walking (in heel work)or should a dog only sit when given a command to sit?

Not sure about competitve obedience, but my dogs are taught to sit when I stop at the training club I attend, and to me it is a great asset to have dogs that will do this. I teach it straight away now, even when I'm just play learning with them.

My training club were doing this too which is what got me thinking about it, although I'm not sure if I'll do any competitions.

My friend who has one of Cariad's older daughters, Kofie, does competitive obedience (although she does flyball with Kofie as obedience and Utonagan are a contradiction in terms ) so will ask her when I get a minute.

They sit when you stop although in the lower classes a command may be given.

In some of the higher classes the dog may be requested to wait in a different position.

Dogs should be taught that when you stop with your feet together then they take up the basic position (ie sit) with no command, this is also true in Working Trials and IPO.

With positions on the move they need to take up the sit, down and stand whilst you are still moving with a command to indicate the position (this is the same in IPO)

I prefer a command, so you can get an extra heel in just before the sit.
Dogs name- Heel - Sit
I find I get a straighter sit that way, but depends on the class you are in.
I dont compete in the higher classes so I can use loads of commands.
