We considered a rescue puppy when we got our (now 9 months old) cocker spaniel last year.

I also have a young child, and having only ever had rescue dogs before, rescue was my first consideration.

However, rescue puppies are often not bred with the same consideration for temperment as puppies bred by a repsonsible breeder , and even with good socialising and training they can, sometimes, develop behavioural problems which make them less suitable as pets within a family environment

We therefore, somewhat reluctantly at first, found a breeder who we got to know and who agreed that our choice of puppy was ideal for our environment. We are so pleased we listened to her!

I have come to terms with my decison not to 'rescue' as I would have hated being faced with a decision to rehome a young dog that was unhappy with children

Good luck with your search. Have you contacted your local breed club? They can put you in touch with breeders and are a brilliant source of support and advice

Thanks for the info. We decided we wanted a pup for all of the resons you mentioned above. Like I said in my post above we just lost our cat of 14 years, two years before that we lost our cat of 13 years. When I lived at home we had a dog for 15 years and two cats for 14 years and 16 years so as you can see we are *Keepers* so this pup just has to be as right as it can be as we will be keeping it for many years regardless.

We have contacted a few breed clubs but havent really come up with anything as yet.

a good pup is never to far to travel for ,dont forget its gonna be with you for a long time hopefully.

Thats what I thought, it would have just been easier for us if it was nearer. If it is too far the children wouldnt be able to see the pup until we brought it home (Two out of the three of them are very travel sick) Then it would be two long trips, one to decide on a pup one to pick it up....... But still your right if I have to travel I will.
