Grapes are Expensive!

By my calculation about £320/kg when they involve a trip to the emergency vet.

Phoned the Vet after Mac scoffed / thieved / mugged them from us. Phone vet....'bring him in'

Apparently it is unknown which dogs will be affected, but if they are then it can result in renal failure!

He seems OK now, but staying up a while to keep an eye on him

Yes I was surprised to learn that grapes and sultanas can be toxic to dogs. I've owned a dog in the past that loved them (though I don't suppose she ever ate more than 2 or 3. My dog loves almost all fruit except bananas.

I do hope your dog makes a full recovery.

Does it take a lot of grapes to make a dog very ill?

Oh heck!!!! I very rarely buy them because they are so blasted expensive, however at THAT price I would have to forego them altogether .

Hope Mac is ok though and shows no side effects. Norty dog!

I think the link between grapes and renal is causal and therefore not proven, however that's enough for the vet to take precautions

I was once staying with a friend and her crossbreed terrier jumped onto the counter when we out of the room and ate half a kilo of sultanas.

The dog was maybe around the 12kg mark (three-quarters Bedlington, one quarter Border) and later on that night the dog was very unwell, shaking and vomiting, very depressed.

At that time it was not widely known grapes and raisins could be toxic so my friend had NO idea what was wrong and thought it was just a tummy bug. Her other dogs, however, were as fit as a flea.

Thankfully in the morning the dog was much better and brighter and was back to normal by the afternoon. But when we had a look on the internet about sultanas/raisins we saw some horrifying data from the USA.

Very possibly the poor dog may have had permanent kidney damage from that episode...
