That's interesting Griff you picked the first one as both take within seconds of each other. Same camera on a tripod settings on camera unchanged, all I did was hold the flashlight on one side of the flowers and then on the other to see how much difference it made. Have to say I prefer the second as there is more detail in the flower head, but yes it puts the ones behind in the shade

Actually looking at the second it is brighter at the back on the right hand side. Deceiving what light does to photos and anything that is looked at. Shadows play a part in everything.

Thanks all for the replies, it was an experiment in lighting now I can use the flashgun and camera with radio triggers. Before it was only by "line of sight" with an infrared beam.

You will have to start having night cameras to see what is walking around the garden at night. Like they do on wild life programmes.
