A dog has suffered a 'horrendous death' after being hanged by a metal chain from a bridge.

The female cross-breed was found dangling lifeless from a cycle bridge over the River Irwell in Bury.

RSPCA inspector Caroline Hall, who was called to the scene, said she thought the hanging was intentional.

“That someone could do such a thing is just unbelievable to me,” she added.

“I’m keeping an open mind as to who the person, or people, responsible for this awful act of cruelty are.

“What I do know is that this dog suffered a horrendous death.

“It seems likely that the person or people responsible took her to this bridge intending to do what they did to her.”

The young dog is described as tri-coloured and was apparently healthy.

She was wearing a green leather collar but did not have an ID tag or a micro-chip.

The dog was found on Saturday morning by a member of the public, who called police. The RSPCA were informed at 8.30am.

Inspector Hall has appealed for help to bring those responsible to justice.

She said: “There’s no way of knowing who she belonged to or how she came to be on that bridge without them.”

“I want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious or who recognises her as soon as possible.”

Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal carries a maximum sentence of six months in prison and a £20,000 fine under the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

Anyone with information can call the RSPCA on the 24-hour cruelty line 0300 1234 999 and ask to leave a message for Inspector Hall. Calls are in confidence.
