What about heart worm prevention

I see that heart worms have practically been eliminated in Southern California and some other western states. I wonder if it's possible to stop Hartgard and other preventatives in those areas? (I read that the reason is that mosquitoes have been controlled in those areas.)

Where did you hear this? I wouldn't take the risk. Especially since the medication that treats heartworms is currently on backorder.

The American Heartworm Society published a map on the internet entitled "Incidence 2010" showing Southern California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah as virtually free of heart worms.

Weigh the benefits against the risks and make an informed choice. Is montly prevention hurting your dogs? Did you realize that monthly HW prevention also deworms for intestinal parasites (that I am certain still exist in abundance in SoCal) its up to you, but I wouldn't take a chance. Especially considering that treatment isn't an option at this moment in time, should your dog come up positive.
