Schutzhund misconceptions .

I was talking to a dog walker this morning about working dogs and he was saying he wanted to try schutzhund as he intended to teach his dog protection .
I mentioned the other parts of the tests and he was like i dont want to do those parts just the protection work ...
Is this the normal perception of schutzhund??
I thought the idea was to have an all around working dog .
Not a dog that is attacked trained ..

Dogs are not trained to "attack" but to protect!

Anyway it is because of numpties like this that you cannot JUST train protection at a Schutzhund Club, you have to demonstrate that you want to do the tracking and the obedience.

TBF it is not unlike many other sports or pastimes, people are attracted to the "sexy" bits, not the boring bits.

Tracking is not sexy.

I cannot answer for the "normal" perception of Schutzhund. As everyone has a different view, 99% of those you ask have never even BEEN to a survey, attended a club or seen it on TV yet they all have an opinon!

It is a bit like assuming all men who show toy dogs are gay.

It has about as much spectator appeal as underwater chess to most people.

I LOVE teaching my dog to track and I love watching other dogs tracking ... I must be odd

The biggest misconception I have come across with regards to Schutzhund is that dogs trained for Schutzhund are just biting machines and are dangerous (so from this I guess that some people do believe that Schutzhund is all about protection/bite work without any of the control ).

I love seeing dogs work - whether it's Schutzhund, Gundogs (field trials/scurries), obedience, HTM or Pastoral work, when I used to walk around Rother Valley they'd be Newfoundlands training for retrieving people from the water.. that was interesting to watch too.

RE: Schutzhund. My OH is planning on getting a GSD after he's done in the army and I've told him about this and he really liked the Protection side of it more than any of the other bits.. but thats my conditions for him having a GSD.
