As lots of you probably know my 2 live outside, as have all my dogs. They are quite happy, they have room to play and socialise with each other, stretch out in the sun if they fancy it, or go inside if the weather is bad.
They have very thick coats with a fluffy undercoat, and to be honest I think it would be cruel to bring a dog like that inside because they would be way to hot.
I often find my 2 lay outside in the snow and when it is freezing, they just don't feel the cold. The only thing they don't like is heavy rain, for instance on Sunday they only came out to be fed and to raid the log pile for another log to chew on!!!
I have the top half of the office door open on a nice day such as today, they are not even bothered, they are lay in the sun asleep.
In the winter I put sacks of shavings in their house, I have just bought a log cabin style kennel as well because they are getting older and one may decide she wants her own 'home'. They are cleaned out every day and any wet shavings removed, fed twice a day with a bone and fruit at lunchtime, have regular walks and are brushed regularly.
There is never any dropping left longer than a couple of hours if I am out, or overnight sometimes - but that isn't everday either.
Everyone who meets my 2 says they are so laid back they are horizontal, so they must be quite happy with their living conditions.
If they were in my small house they would have cramped conditions, not be able to play at will or walk around they way they can outside, so to me it would be cruel to bring them in as they have more fun outside.

I think the authorities (read RSPCA) now have powers to remove dogs BEFORE real acts of cruelty are commited rather than having to wait for it to occur. In reality though I think at the very least the RSPCA can be made aware and try and work with this woman?
I had a 'friend' who kept her dogs in similar situation and I just couldn't justify being friends with her any more. I've done my best, like you, but it was just getting me down. She's now, apparently, in the market for a standard poodle so I'm trying to do the best to make sure she doesn't get one! She sounds very similar to your friend, seemingly well thought of yet her welfare standards are appalling, she's bought in and rehomed 1 chinese crested, 1 bedlington, 1 deerhound, 5-6 lurchers, working beardie and gsd in about 4 years yet when you read what she writes on the interent you'd think she was an ideal owner! She;s also from Essex!

On the subject, all mine come and go as they please but they all prefer to be inside, preferably on a sofa. IMO not letting dogs in the house seems pointless having a dog.
But you are talking pet dogs ... what about workers? Your dogs are also greyhounds I think??? They are well known for being couch potatoes

Like I said, my preference is to have my dogs inside with me - but not sure that would be their preference, given the choice

Ours all live inside at the moment due to necessity! (Not the best area), we're moving in a month or so though and will put up at least one kennel for drying them off etc. We tend to leave the backdoor open and freeze! so that they can wander at will.

I have no problems with people kennelling dogs as long as they're giving the dogs care and stimulation. I think its better for working dogs to be outside.

Ziggie would rather live outside and spends most of his time out there - he always has, its just what he prefers.

If you keep dogs outside in pairs though or as a group, they have their "pack".

what you would do as you seem to be know it all.
Wasnt accusing you of anything just stating my opinion, sorry if it offended and certainly didnt mean to come across as a know it all and I dont really think there is any need to get that personal.

What I would do would probably not be within the law but I would be ringing the RSPCA on a regular basis, making sure of regular visits by them not a one off call. Many rescues would also take an interest in this case.

Actually no not all my dogs are greyhounds, I didnt realise we were only talking working dogs and not pets. However some of my dogs have worked - and I do know what their preference is and its still a warm house and a sofa.

I have my dogs in the house for my benefit, not theirs & I'm happy with in or out as long as they are adequately cared for. Must say I've known some dogs who didn't respond so well in a house.Had a friend who had to let a dog go back to his breeder. He was 3 when she had him & he never settled in her house cried at the door all the time when he was in but was happy in the garden. He later went to another home with outdoor kennels & settled immediately. This wasn't the case with my last bitch though she was 3 when she came to live here & had been kennelled before that except when she'd had a litter. From day one she loved it,& never went out in the garden except to play with the dog or to relieve herself, & she wasn't happy about that if it was raining.

Sorry, I may have confused the issue ... we are talking "dogs" - pets, working dogs, whatever ... dogs in general

My dachies are house dogs, and all my dogs as puppies are kept in the house, as were my first two Borzois, but with the two I have a present I have a kennel and a run for them but they are in and out of the house as they wish. When it is raining the spend more time in the house, but when the weather is warm they prefer to be outside and when it is dry and cold or snowy they prefer to be outdoors. Think it must be something to do with Russia being their country of origin and with them being a long coated breed. They prefer being outside. Their kennel is heated and lined and they have a small run, but spend most days out in the back garden play fighting and inter-acting with each othrt and when it is warm outside my backdoor is popen so they can go in and out as they please. I also find that the coats of these two are better than two who lived all the time in the house. So I suppose mine are a bit of both and as I said on another thread they even get up on ther couch by invitation and could not be loved any more than they are.
