Which tree is this?

Whilst I was clearing the undergrowth , I came across this upright stem.

I don't know what could possibly have such dark buds.
It is alive and growing and I don't want to clear it away if it might be something I'd want.
It might not be a tree, but a shrub. I don't know.
Any ideas?

Ash? Crikey - that's about 60 foot of tree - and its right next to the patio
That could well be going - I shall google some images to check, first.

Pam, if that's ash, it is in for a surprise - not me

We used to have one in the back and it did grow pretty big hence we took it down, but it did bush out a bit at the bottom when we lopped it a few times.... actually its growing back behind the fence!!

There are different types of ash as I have just googled too make sure what I say is right.

If its a mountain ash or rowan tree it has the cluster of orange berries they aren't too bad they do grow big but not so big as the other type of ash which I think is also known as a sycamore they have the helicopter seed pods and are a nuisance and do grow very big.

We have a sycamore near us and are constantly getting saplings springing up and they only need a few weeks and are very hard to pull up.

I have a mountain ash in my garden contained in a large tub but it does not grow anywhere near as prolifically as the sycamore.

I would say its horse chestnut? Under each of the buds is there a semi circle with dots in it, like a tiny horseshoe?

Someone in your house planted a conker?
