Westies can do it...?

Maisy the westie and I did our advanced road safety test today at our training club and we passed....

I'm so happy... Can remember the looks/ smirks I got when I took Maisy to training at a previous club... As who would want to do obedience with a stupid/ stuborn terrier... ect...

Well we showed them today (although different club) With a lot of hard work terriers can be good at OB and enjoy it.

Trainers said its the first westie they have ever passed.

Thanks

Couldn't find a web site explaining it, so I'll just have to do it instead.

heelwork on & off lead, including sits and downs at different speeds: slow, normal and fast
The downs you had to tell them down and keep walking for a few meters, turn walk passed dog, turn back and then continue heel work x 3 – Off lead.

stop/drop on recall, then tell them to come and do a sit and then a fish, where dog has to sit on your left side.

2 minute sit and 4 minute down stay. both out of sight

There are plenty of terriers who compete in Working Trials and Obedience. I judged a lovely WHWT once.

IMHO there are not stubborn breeds, just less than inventive owners.

Oh, Robyn that is great! I forgot you had that on Wednesday (It was Wednesday right? )! I am kicking myself now because I meant to send you a good luck text, and you only reminded me about it on Saturday! Ah well, I knew you would do it! Maisy is a wee star

Brilliant!

Nothing wrong with Westies or terriers in general, they can be trained really well! You just need to understand them - like you do any dog really. Molly is a joy, been such an easy dog most of the time.

If someone struggles to train a Westie, then you have to question their training abilities, I think.

I agree with this completely.

Terriers can be feisty, of course, but once you dip in to what makes them tick, you're on to a good thing really. You just have to think outside the box and read between the lines.

Congratulations both of you.
My little Cairn Terrier Sam was very biddable and really loved a bit of training. Actually the sit probably saved his life once.

Yep totally agree, I stated other peoples opinions on the fact I wanted to train a westie in OB....

I think it is also important to have a good bond with them, wee Maisy loves doing OB and working with me...
