Trick Training Challenge Wk 1

OK this weeks trick is..... Give a Paw!
Now this challenge is on several levels. If your dog doesn't give any paw then the challenge is to train the Give a Paw command.
If your dog already does it but only the one paw then the challenge is to get your dog to give the other one.
If your dog already does both then the challenge is to train your dog to place a paw onto an object.
If your dog already does all of these ( ) then the challenge is to teach your dog to wave!
I think that should allow just about everyone to join in and have fun.
Please use this thread to discuss training methods, your progress etc etc and we will see how we have all done by the end of the week.
Right best start training Terra to sit first lol!
Good Luck everyone and have fun with your doglet!
TBBS will be here to help guide us with tips and vids!

Why Becky? No reason you can't teach it from a stand

I'm going for the putting a paw on an object with Cava.

Ok everyone, here's how I trained my lot to give paw:-
I had them sitting in front of me with me kneeling on the floor, I had a treat in my hand with my hand firmly closed and then I just waited for them to try to get to the treat with the paw, then I clicked and treated (if you don't use a clicker just open your hand as soon as they try to get the food with the paw). Ignore all attempts of them trying to get the treat with their nose, you may have to be very patient as I had to with Bertie, he took ages to try using his paws, but my girls both picked it up really quickly.

For that already give paw, teach them to put their paw on an object, that starts with you putting your hand on the object and getting them to give paw, then you gradually move your hand away until they put their paw on the object. Here's Bertie demonstrating!

When I got Boomer at 6 months all he knew was to give paw, he didn't sit without giving paw, so I had to reteach them as seperate excercises, then I extended his paw to a paw wave by holding my hand higher and moving it further away. Here's a short vid of Boomer demonstrating (sorry it's on it's side).

Good luck everyone, have fun. If you have difficulties post and I'll try to help.

What commands do you give for each behaviour? I'm assuming they must be different so as not to confuse the dog lol! (or me!!)

Not sure if I'll find the time for all 3 of mine, but I'm hoping:

Tip - give a paw
Stumpy - give 'the other one'
Hoki - touch something.

Hmmm, now that I've said that, I'm going to have to find the time aren't I

Okay....Biff is going to skip this one as he is sore at the moment and his front legs are a bit stiff

Cosmo already gives a paw so...I have tried getting him to wave but he's not too into it...I like the idea of getting him to put his paw on something so we may go for that one.
Tango...well, Tango can sit, so this will be her first trick. We'll give it a go.

I use
paw for their right front paw
foot for their left front paw
wave for wave (although Boomer is deaf now, so only does it on hand signal)
place for putting their paw on object

I think we might skip this one too as Monty has huge feet and we've always been reluctant to teach give a paw as we don't want him landing his giant feet in peoples laps if he wants something and I know his character well enough to know that's what he'd do!!

I might try and teach him to put his paw on things such as his toys though.

Good luck to all those taking part, look forward to seeing your progress!

Dale can do that lot but I haven't asked him to wave for ages. I'd forgotten so we'll go over it and I'll try to get Chip to wave as well.
