Like Smokey Bear we would get rid of stuff once it has been used, just you need to make sure the dog is looking for the article and not its own spit.

Most articles you will find at competition are free or cheap, last UD open I judged had 32 entries, so with 4 square, 2 track articles for each, plus some as samples for the trials manager and a few spares that was 200 articles.

The odder articles do come in sometimes, especially in PD, where sometimes they are used as part of the scenario.

I have had both pine cones and CD's in a square, but many judges would not use them.

Dogs can see white and yellow easily (and so can the handlers).

Have you ever broken a CD?

Try it and imagine that in a dog's mouth.

And what happens when pine cones get wet..........?

They expand.

The rules say to use articles unlikely to be injurious to dogs, so, whilst NOTHING is risk free a number of considerations have to be made.

For example, you would never leave a metal article on a 3 hour old track in the ice and snow or on a summer's day as, if a dog picked it up..................

When a certain judge judged the PD at the KCCs a few years ago, one of the square articles was a rubber snake.................. personally I thought that was stupid.
