Can I still breed from a dog with ENTROPIAN ?

I have a young Cocker Spaniel who I bought for working and to breed from.
Soon after buying her, my vet diagnosed her as having Entropian and advised me not to breed from her. However, no such problems had shown up in her bloodlines. The breeder, by the way, is highly regarded. Different people have said that it's unlikely she would pass on the problem.
Despite people saying they would buy a pup if she had a litter, I won't breed if there's any likelihood of the condition being passed on.
I don't know if anyone has any knowledge or experience of this.

Thanks
Kuler

Hi, I saw your post on the gundog training forum.

I would not touch a puppy from a dam/sire with entropian.

Have you seen an eye specialist?

The world is not short of cocker spaniels.

Whether or not this has cropped up in the bloodlines previously is immaterial, it has now.

It is a bit like breeders saying "There is no need to hip/elbow score/eye test as I have never had any dogs with any problems"

None that they KNOW about or have been tested for.

If she were mine I would not breed from her.

To be fair, the OP said if there's any chance of it being passed on, she will not be bred from... so the OP is being responsible in asking the question

To the OP - It's good that you asked, I can understand why you would when other people have said that it may be ok. After all, I've heard of vets advising staffy owners (the breed with the highest number of unwanted dogs and puppies in this country) to have a litter prior to spaying (regardless of health) so not all vets can be trusted!

However, your vet is right on this one and she certainly shouldn't be bred from.

Does the breeder know about the Entropian? If the breeder is as highly regarded as you say they will certainly want to know that one of their pups is affected by this as it means that their lines are carrying it.

Best of luck with her

Please dont breed as its a miserable condition both for the dog & owner. Ive known dogs that have to have surgery every year to correct this problem. The breeder you got the dog off will definitely want to know.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
My gut feeling was not to use her for breeding and your comments have supported this.
In truth it's gutting as I spent an eternity deciding the lines and the actual puppy, as my plans are to trial and breed Cockers.
It's a pity as this little dog is an absolute beauty in everyway and I believe would have been a real asset to her breed.

Many of us have had our hopes dashed in one way or another re plans for our dogs.

The most important thing is that you still have a lovely dog to work, love and train.
