Cherry eye

Hi my dog seems to have cherry eye and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. When he first got it it came and went but now it's permanent. My vet wishes to remove it but I've read that this can be more problematic. I have to book him in to have it removed next week. Has anyone got any advice?

Thought I knew a bit about eyes but obviously not. What is cherry eye?

Cherry eye, very common in bulldogs. I think it's best to go ahead with the removal if it cannot be tamed. I have heard the removal is not usually a huge deal, and the gamble is often worth the permanent cherry eye, anyway.

I've never had a dog with cherry eye, but do know of a case. I believe the most simple op. is to tack it back into place. Some vets actually create a pocket for it to sit into. Complete removal is usually a last resort. I would ask your vet to explain fully which op. he recommends for your dog. I understand that leaving it as it is not a long term option.

Thanks, I spoke to the vet but felt that she was young and inexperienced, I suggested that she tack it into place but she said that this wasn't a good option and removal was the best thing.
Cherry eye is when the dogs third eyelid ( which all dogs have) comes out from under the eye but swells and won't go back into place. This is common in some breeds of dogs especially bulldogs.

Speak to another vet before you make a decision.

Our Lhasa Apso cross had cherry eye at about a year old. We had it operated on, as it was irritating her and didn't look very nice. Results were perfect, 8 years on we've had no further problems.

We were aware of possible complications.. dry eye etc. But i think the pros far outweighed the cons.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
