My laptop is about 3 years old and uses Windows 2000 Professional. It originally came with ME,but this kept crashing (apparently it isnt suitable for laptops) so managed to get hold of this 2000 version.

I dont wanna get rid of this laptop because it does everything i want it to and cannot justify the expense of a new one.I know a conventional tower system would give me more memory etc,but i like having laptop because it takes up very little space in my lounge.

There are a few computer shops round here-are they capable of upgrading the RAM???

They should be capapble Steve.
I find the little shops are better than the bigger ones. (such as PC world - where they don't seem to know a CD from a PSU). Also, if you take your PC to somewhere like PC world, and you have something they don't like on your computer, they are within their rights to erase your hard disk without letting you know first

I'd certainly get that laptop along to an independant PC shop and ask 'em if they can stick lots more memory in there for you. I've never had a lapto, but I can imagine it'd be tricky to do it yourself. I've got a tower PC. Plenty of room for taking the cover off and messing about! Not very portable though...

I haven't clicked on the links with the explainations of ram, but my understanding is... ram is where programs get read from disk to and will stay in the memory while they're running. Hence why you need lots of ram for running things at the same time...

Tuning tip for those who have two hard disks but not much ram. (Unlikely in a laptop, sorry...) If your 'spare' disk doesn't get used much and has lots of space, change the setting to get Windows to put the virtual memory swap file on it. That way while the busy disk is loading programs and whatnot, the 'idle' one can be used for virtual memory, thereby making things a bit faster.
