Ooops, didn't mean to quote you, sorry
I was just worried people might think I was tarring all rescue dogs as having issues, you were quite right in pointing out that from what you'd read that wasn't the case.

Mine are both adopted , its personal choice where you have your woofs from and choices are made for many different reasons and some people wont have anything second hand anyway , the thing with dogs is just because they are second hand doesnt make them second best and my experience had been that this is the unfortunate view of some people,

just saying .......and not in reply to anything I have read in the thread

Our last GSD was a rescue, whose breeder would have taken her back if they had been approached by the previous owners. I assessed a GSD bitch for suitability to be rehomed a couple of months back, had she been good with cats & little dogs I would have fostered her here with a view to adopting, sadly she wasn't, but has been homed to someone who had just lost their previous GSD & who was the perfect new owner for her(& yes they did have a fairly young child !)

My dog is a rescue and I have no doubt that my next few dogs will be rescues too. I always say I'd love to have a pup from my own choice of lines but realistically, I will always pick a rescue over a puppy from a breeder. If I can't rescue from an actual rescue then I will go the private route because realistically, I'm not that fussed about lines or being able to show. I just want a dog who gets along with my dog and wants to go for walks and have lie ins with me and Molly

Although I only want rescues, I don't think anyone should feel guilty about buying from a breeder. Without responsible people buying from reputable breeders so many wonderful breeds would cease to exist as we know them and that would be just as terrible as our current rescue crisis.

This is fast moving thread!

Live and let live. I do not think you should feel guilty but if you do feel guilty then maybe you should rescue a dog alongside your pedigree. Or donate to a rescue centre. That is only if you DO feel guilty.

I think rescuing a dog has become fashionable with the under 30s because of the dog whisperer show. People who watch the show but do not know much about dogs. With rescue centres specialising in different breeds then more and more people will probably rescue. Of course this situation has only arisen because there are so many dogs in rescue. Thirty years ago the perception, rightly or wrongly, was that there was only retired Greyhound racers in rescues. It is also a generation thing in that after a few rescues and when people are a bit older they want an easy life and buy.

It is also true that all the millionaires I know who have pretty wives, successful friends, grand houses and big cars would never have a mut. That is their insecurity though. I got a dog born feral on the beach and it is better looking than any of their dogs!

I have to say, I really don't like the comparison on this thread between getting a puppy rather than rescue, and having a baby that is genetically yours over fostering or adopting. I feel like it's a totally separate thing. A baby you give birth to (or help make) is 1/2 genetically yours, that's special. No dog, puppy or adult is ever going to be genetically related to you, it's a different thing altogether. I can understand why the comparison was made, just don't like it.
I completely agree. It is not comparable at all. My best friend uses that example, saying that adopting or rescuing would take up too much of his time which he could better spend helping more people!

Some people see a pedigree as having more value in their being than a mut. I have friends who will stop and talk to a Feral* GSD but see a mut as no better than a rat.

*there is/was a GSD that was washed up in the 04 sunami

I am still happy to go to an ethical breeder but i know someone who has said they will never buy another dog from a breeder again ...
What do you think ??
no guilt here . i have a breed that i love , thats been well reared , health checked and carefully bred, and am able to have the pup from 7-8 weeks.

if i visited a rescue centre i'd want to bring them all home
