Shooting/Beating

I have wanted to have a go at shooting/beating for ages, but I cannot find any info on how to start. Not aware of any estates around here.

Would love to find somewhere, does anyone know if there are any in my neck of the woods?

Not sure where your neck of the woods is but have a look at nobs.org.uk - think that's the website, but just google nobs - nothing nasty will come up

You could also go into a local gunshop/clay ground as there are sometimes adverts. A lot of the time, it's word of mouth though.

Are you just wanting to go beating, or take up shooting as well? A good clay ground is a good place to start shooting under an instructor.

I am a member of NOBS and they are always looking for beaters. I went on their beating course and it was very informative.

Beating is a long, cold day where you get ripped to shreds by barbed wire, trees and only get to eat after the guns and the pickers up

Some people love it, others do not.

You can do it with or without dogs and the going rate for this is circa £15 and a meal and a shooting day for beaters at the end of the season.

Quite surprised at that as it's double that here, and £40 for grouse beating, which is HARD work.

I used to get £25 in Northumberland, but before we moved, it went up to £30. Interesting. Will have to ask around as I only know what this estate pays. Maybe more and more people are getting involved and they feel they don't need to pay as much.

I'm sure there are plenty of shoots in Kent.

This estate pays £50 for grouse beating afaik - which is not to be sniffed at. I think I am going to have a go (and take Zak) when Ben is in school next year.

hmmm..will deffo have a good look into it. I wouldnt mind a bit of extra cash, but more the social aspect

Nobs really is worth using, never used it myself, OH's a keeper, so I've always got picking up, but have met people that have managed to go to loads of estates through it!!

I know that here on the grouse beaters are paid 40-something pound and pickers up are paid £57, on a next door moor, it's the same, but I get £55 for picking up.
On the pheasants here it's £44 picking up and £34 for beaters, although we might get a £2 pay rise like we did on the grouse!
