Badger cull: 3 week extension applied for!

Badger cull FAILED so NFU seek 3 week extension! Government claimed cull had to be carried out with 6weeks time scale to minimize risk of perturbation. In the RBCT they used 10 DAY windows. An extension is a recipe for perturbation! NINE weeks culling in this shambles

Warped logic behind the cull was an explosion in the badger population, 11 days ago Defra said number of badgers in Somerset to be culled is 2081 - now they are saying its 815 - 59% drop! They have no idea of the badger population, not only across the country as a whole, but even in the cull zones where they claimed this ....

We have ROBUST estimates of badger populations in the cull areas from sett surveys and DNA samples.

Badger ecologist Professor Rosie Woodroffe warned them they risked local extinctions if culls went ahead, had free shooting been proved an efficient way to kill badgers, that is what we would be looking at now!

Owen Paterson before the cull: "It would be wrong to go ahead if those on the ground cannot be confident of removing at least 70% of the population”

What an absolute disgrace & an affront to science, truth and democracy.

There was never going to be any point in giving a precise time window IMO, how could they know how many they could kill at any one time? I personally think it should continue till levels are realised. Thankfully though, those who said they would stop it, either havent or couldnt, so with a bit of luck this extension will be all that is required and there will be no more disturbance.

You obviously don't know about the perturbation effect then? or the FACT that culling can make no meaningful difference to tb in cattle?

I know enough to wholly support a cull with the hopes it will have an effect, because there is nobody on this earth can say it will or it wont until its complete.

To ignore 30 odd Independent eminent experts who spoke out to say the cull is 'mindless' & could make the tb situation worse is beyond reckless & arrogant.

And surprise surprise, as predicted, the culls are proving to be an absolute shambles.

Hi If they could only produce concrete facts that Badgers are the culprit, but they can't,badgers are one of the few animals who build a latrine as part of the sett,so unless they carry it in their coats like the fox carrying mange, and that has been looked at,but they dont even know how the badger can be a carrier and if they are how do Cattle get it.Its all very well experts going on but their are no real facts, maybe people should go to Europe and get them to look at this maybe then the Badger could live in peace.Gemini54

From the heart of rural farming Ireland,, they gotta have something to blame and the badger got scapegoated generations ago here. Traditonal culprit and it will take many generations to change that.

They are protected here but nights are dark...
