Is My Puppy Eating Enough?

Hello! I have a 15 week old lab/collie mix (she will be 15 weeks old on thursday). She eats 1 cup of dry food 3 times per day, plus a few treats throughout the day. She literally inhales her food, which makes me worry that I am not feeding her enough. I guess that this is normal since she is a growing puppy. I weighed her this morning and she is 18.6 pounds, which means that she has gained 1.4 pounds since we brought her home 11 days ago... is this a normal weight gain? Thank you for any input!

At 15 weeks I would still be feeding a puppy four times a day, but a lot depends on what you are actually feeding her on.

I am sure that people more experience than I will be along soon, so in the meantime

and photos please!

It's a little hard to know without knowing what food she is actually eating - different types will need different sizes.
Are there no guidelines on the packet?
For instance, I feed my Dobermann puppy Arden Grange large breed puppy and their guidelines would be feeding between 180 - 305grams per day (spread across the 3 meals in this case).

The Purina website advises 1-1/3 to 1-2/3 cups a day (Using a standard 8 oz. (250 ml) measuring cup which contains approximately 96 g of Purina ONE)

I would never follow the amount on the bag very closely as, in my experience, it's usually too much. As long as you treat it as a guide only and bear in mind that every dog is different, that's fine. My youngster inhaled his food too so I bought one of the shaped slow eater bowls and that has helped.

As long as he is healthy and energetic and not showing any ribs, I wouldn't worry too much. My pups would be on three meals a day by now too.

Does she look skinny and boney? If not I shouldn't worry. And if she is looking too podgy, cut the amount down a bit.

Some dogs inhale their food, it does not mean they are hungry, if she looks OK, and is gaining weight then I would not worry...

You could try putting one of her meals in a kong or buy a bowl that is designed for fast eaters (slows them down) , but otherwise she sounds like she is doing OK.

Hi and welcome

She certainly shouldn't look slim at just 4 months old and just under 8.5 kilos does not sound very much for a labx. However, without seeing a photo of her from the side and above it is almost impossible to tell. It is so easy to give too much and then they get an upset tummy. Don't worry about your dog inhaling it - one of my two inhales his food while the other one takes ages chewing every bit.

This may help: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/conten...gs-weight.html

You could always take her down to your vet surgery and get her weighed. They don't charge and you could then ask if her weight is about right.
