Dog buried alive in Italy is saved

A dog that was blindfolded and buried alive by his callous owner has been saved after spending at least 40 hours underground. The dog was finally rescued after neighbours, hearing him whimpering, came to his aid.

Jerry, a 13-year-old Brittany spaniel, was found in a two foot deep hole, covered with earth and bricks, unable to dig himself out. A bandage was wrapped around his eyes. He is recovering at an animal refuge centre in Italy and luckily his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The owner, who has been accused of cruelty, admitted burying Jerry but stated to police that he thought the dog was already dead and was “simply getting rid of the remains”. However, he had earlier told one of the rescuers that he “couldn't say why” he'd buried him there the day before. A police spokesman said that if convicted, the owner would “lose the right to own a pet again”.
