Police handler and dog stabbed

A police handler and his dog have both been stabbed after an attempted arrest of a man suspected of stabbing another man in the stomach. The incident happened in Ipswich on Tuesday evening, when officers, following up on information, stopped a man believed to be the suspect. The man, described as agitated, was carrying a knife and when the police attempted to detain him by using a Taser, he stabbed the German Shepherd in the leg and caused injuries to the handler's arm and back.

A 21-year-old man has been taken into custody for questioning.

The man with the stomach injury is said to be in stable condition. The police officer is recovering at home after treatment and it is reported that armoured clothing saved him from more serious injuries. Aman, the six-year-old German Shepherd, had to undergo emergency surgery at a veterinary clinic but is reported to be recovering well.
