Dogs nails falling out

My 6 year old dachshund's dew claw was hanging off last week so I took him to vets and whilst in waiting room another nail came off. Vet said he was hoping it was a coincidence but he could have a disease. Gave me antibiotics and told me to come back in a week. Just noticed another nail has come off and it's bleeding slightly. Have called vet and have to take him in in 2 days.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this disease? What is the treatment and is there a cure?

Poor thing only had back surgery 9 months ago.

Thank you

Hi Kerry Problems with nails are often caused by damage to the bed of the nail but as more than one nail is involved in this instance that is unlikly to be the case.
There are fugal infections that can affect the nail but I don't have any experience of them.
No doubt your vet can sort it out

Losing nails can signal all sorts of things so until your vets has carried out some tests, I doubt anyone will be able to give you any viable pointers.

Good luck. I hope it's something very simple and easy to cure x

Biggest thing. Don't panic or worry. I did both of those things for weeks googling all sorts of rubbish waiting for test results on my rotties. Got all sorts in my head. Turned a fungal inaction but he did lose them all. He was no worse for it. And they grew back fine. Good luck xx

Been back to vet tonight and another nail came out whilst we were there. Vet thinks it might be best putting him to sleep and removing them all. Going to see if any more come out first. Vet cannot be sure if when they grow back they don't come out again. Does anyone else have any experience with those?

I don't have any direct experience, but google brought up symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy.

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar? It might be worth doing some more research.

I do hope you get some answers soon.
