Garden Lime

Has anyone ever used garden lime on their lawn?

I've read that it's good for removing the smell of stale dog urine from the grass and helping the yellow patches to grow back so am thinking of trying it as the smell in our back garden is horrid on a hot sunny day.

If you have used it did it work and did you have to keep the dog off the grass? And did it have any adverse effect on your dog??
