I always thought it was the Chinese that started the whole lap dog trend?

hmmm me too. cos didnt they do the whole peke in the sleeve thing?

Yeaah - and the whole kingdom of Chinese royalty had to bow to the dogs - failure to do so would either result in death or life time imprisonment - I believe.

There's was also an ancient Peruvian dog called a Chincha Bulldog which was almost identical to a French Bulldog.
