Charlie - Special Collie

Charlie is a 3 year old Tri Collie cross and is currently on foster in Pontypridd, South Wales.



Charlie is a very special dog who is looking for an equally special home.
Charlie has hip dysplasia which affects his mobility. This is a very recent diagnosis and his foster carer is currently working on establishing the best pain relief and management for the condition.



Charlie is a typical busy, happy collie cross despite his condition. His foster carer describes him as a big puppy; he even looks remarkably puppy like.

Charlie came in to Hope's care from the council pound and was in very poor condition. His coat has had to be clipped down leaving him looking young and fluffy.



Charlie has a number of issues that his foster family are currently working on. He struggles to trust people and likes to keep his distance from unfamiliar people. He likes to keep his personal space all to himself around strangers and is very touch sensitive
.


Charlie can also be defensive when other dogs invade his personal space. He is in foster care with another dog and is gradually being socialised and exposed to more dogs by his fosterer. This will need to be continued by his adoptive family.
Charlie is showing lots of improvement with these issues and much of it could be pain related due to his hips. Hopefully with correct pain relief and gradual desensitisation he will continue to come on in leaps and bounds.

Charlie is very playful and loving once he gets to know and trust you.

He can be rehomed as an only dog or with quiet, relaxed doggie companions.



All Hope Rescue dogs are neutered, vaccinated, wormed, flea treated and microchipped prior to rehoming. A homecheck will be required, and you will need to come and meet the dog with your own dogs and family. Hope Rescue rehomes throughout the UK.

Well a quick update from me about my week .....

I am loving the snow and my nose is down ploughing through it, something like "a husky pulling a sled" my mum said?
I also had my second Hydro session this week and my new friends there told my mum ' they had forgotten how handsome I was since last week ', that must be due to my mum as she is using this thing to push through my fur that I am really starting to like. I try and have a chew on it if she is not looking but she then tells me "no, it’s a brush Charlie"
I also went into work with my mum and foster brother this week for the first time. I did a really good job of protecting my mum and her co-worker as I sat between their offices in the corridor and any murmur and I went to investigate. All was well though and I did not need to call on the assistance of my foster bro so he just slept under my mums desk

When we got home from "work" I was quite tired and needed a quick nap before my tea, so cwtched up (think that’s welsh for cuddle!) to my bro while my mum carried on "working" mumbling something like "my work is never done?" she managed to get a picture done though.....



So once I had caught up on a little beauty sleep and had my tea, I decided to wind my foster brother up by cheating at a few games of tug of war, but then it was all a bit too much. This "work" thing had really gotten the better of me so I headed off for another nap, but this time hogging the whole sofa .................



So a pretty busy week for me really and apparently I am getting "cheekier" everyday , not sure is that’s a good thing or not , but my foster nanny agrees to and she laughs really loud when she says it

I got a little bit upset this week though and growled, but my mum seems to think that she understands why. On a visit to my foster nans a visitor arrived who I know and like a lot, but they came into the dark hallway with gloves and a hat on and my mum thinks that I could not see who they were. At first I did nothing but when they tried to walk passed me I got a bit scared and made a little noise. I did listen to my mum though and stopped straight away and once I knew who it was all I wanted to do was give them a kiss. Mum said it was time to go anyway and I said my goodbye and went home. I can just imagine what my mum is going to say now, she will complain about her "electric bill" as she will need to put the lights on for me all the time if its dark when people arrive he he he he he

Well that’s all for now, but I am available for any questions if there is someone out there that want to test my knowledge on human behaviour, as I am getting quite good at reading it now !!!

Charlie is still looking

Charlie was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in November 2010 follow x-rays and manipulation. His condition is worse in his left hip. Since his diagnosis, his condition has been managed and he has only had to have minimal pain relief with Metacam. He has also attended hydro therapy to build up the muscles around his hips.

Charlie will be rehomed as a long term foster. This means Hope Rescue will remain responsible for all the costs associated with Charlie's care. There will be no adoption donation, any future veterinary costs, vaccinations, flea and worm treatments etc will all be covered and our team will always be available for support and advice.

Im gutted that he hasn't found his forever home yet....such a special boy needs someone....I have my fingers crossed that his forever home is just round the corner xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The Charlie Fact File
Dog status: When Charlie arrived he was reactive to other dogs and defensive when they invaded his personal space. However, since his diagnosis of HD and subsequent treatment his behaviour has been much improved. His previous foster home worked with a trainer focusing on socialisation work on a long line allowing him to show relaxed, calm body language to approaching dogs. He can however, still take exception to another dog approaching him at speed a small percentage of the time. Charlie has lived happily in a foster home with another male collie and was not food or toy possessive.

Cat status: He has not lived with a cat but has visited homes where cats live and was able to remain calm. He could possibly be rehomed with dog savvy cat and an owner experienced in introducing cats and dogs.

Child status: Charlie will be looking for a new home without children.

House training: Very good, like to be accompanied outside as he can panic if shut out in a garden alone

People status: Charlie can be nervous of new people and shys away from their touch. However, with people he is nervous of he demonstrates and approach/avoid conflict. He will actually approach and invade their personal space by leaning on them or touching them with his nose. If they try to touch him before he is ready he will shy away and has been known to snap at strangers. It is difficult for new people meeting him for the first time to understand his behaviour as he masks his nerves with confidence and approach. This means strangers often try to touch him before he is ready.

Handling: Charlie is very stressed by visits to the vets and finds the experience very scary. He has attended hydro weekly and once he was familiar with the environment and the practitioners he was relaxed and happy to be handled and moved around.

Home alone: Charlie can be left alone without being distressed or destructive. He has always been left with canine company in his time with his last foster home.

Training: Charlie has a good grasp of basic commands, sit, down, stay, back, paw, and hand touches. He is also clicker savvy and work has begun to teach him focus and tricks using the clicker.



Charlie has been around calm, dog savvy children who have visited him whilst he is in foster. Whilst he is well behaved with them, he is looking for a home that is child free as he would not appreciate the natural noise and energy that children generate

Charlie is looking for an experienced new home, with somebody who is experienced with collies or other herding breeds. His training and socialisation will need to continue using positive, kind methods. He will need a patient owner who realises that he may take time to settle due to his previous negative experiences and trust issues. Charlie needs to be exercised and mentally stimulated as he is full of bounce, energy and enthusiasm.
