A question for those with non reactive dogs ?

I hope this is not a silly question

When you have a dog that does not react to other dogs ,

is it that in every situation you have the confidence that your dog will not do anything that will provoke/cause harm to another animal or human ?

So if you are out with your dog you will confidently let it off lead even if you cannot it see it e.g. round the next corner on a twisty path ?

It could have met a reactive dog in the time you took to come round the corner but is that ok if you know its always ok with other dogs and people ?

Well yes and no, any REASONABLE, well socialised, habituated animal/human.

Hmm depends, in areas I know at certain times yes as I am unlikely to meet anyone, but even then I cannot guarantee I will not meet an animal or human that does not meet the above criteria.

No, see above.

I like to extend to others the courtesy I expect for myself. Prevention is better than cure, IME.

Being the owner of a reactive dog who is always on the lead I believe if another owner has their non reactive dog off lead it should always be kept in their sight and should also have good recall. TBH I get fed up of people letting their off lead dogs run about willy nilly not having a clue where they are or what they're up to half the time and usually have zero recall as well.

Being the owner of one reactive dog and one non-reactive dog I try never to let my offlead non reactive dog out of sight, even round a corner, it's selfish and irresponsible incase he meets somebody else's dog who doesn't like other dogs! Even though he won't fight, instead will trot off, but not fair on the owner of the other dog wrestling with their crazy dog on a lead (said in jest, it's usually me wrestling with my crazy female onlead when such happens!).

My bug bear, people letting their dogs come hurtling up to mine offlead, friendly or not. "oh it's ok, they're friendly", no it's not ok!!!

Cheeky woman said that about her spaniel the other day - hmph, Zeke was left with a scar on the tip of his nose to prove otherwise!

It depends on the dog I think
I let Ben offlead on twisty paths and sometimes he is infront of me
But I also know he wont bother another dog and in reality now I think about it I have never seen a reactive dog react to him - he will just wonder past them with the same distance as if he was onlead

Mia - errm no

I agree, I have one of each and never let the non reactive dog out of my sight and always ask permission for her to say hello .

I have a gang of then but I always call them in or drop them if another dog is around that we don't know. Sometimes they may be out of sight in the woods etc but on a path I keep them with me.

Having had a dog who was very reactive and proactive I hate it when dogs run up to dogs on the lead---such bad manners.

Mine are always off lead and sometimes I lose sight of them briefly although I can usually hear them as they'll be crashing through the undergrowth. I rarely meet other dog walkers as I use the less well used paths in the forest. To be honest they're not interested in other dogs and would just carry on with their own thing and ignore any dog they encountered. When in the open grassland they will sometimes entertain other dogs for a while but it's always the other dogs that approach us. We did once meet a reactive Boxer on a very narrow path and I just told my lot to "walk on" and we passed without incident.
