Building a website

Many years ago,I "built" a simple website with the aid of a HTML book. I say I "built" it, in reality I merely configured a few pages in HTML on my PC, I never got as far as uploading it.

Fast forward a few years, I've thrown the out book during one of my moves (grrr!), but would like to put up a simple website - a few pages of text with a couple of photos, that's it.

Is it worth going out and getting another book (if so, any recommendations of a specific one?), or have things moved on since?

I've heard of Wordpress, and am looking this up online but have not downloaded/used it as yet.

Any advice/thoughts (and if I can keep in Linux whilst doing it all the better!)

Michael

I have been persuaded to have a website, so I would be interested in answers too.

Basically what I want is someone to do it for me, but cheap.

I know what material I want up there etc.

But do not have the disposable time or knowledge to do it myself.

Once I've got my page up, I'll send you a link - then we can discuss my rate !

Save your money and get onto the W3 Schools website
http://www.w3schools.com

Has interactive demos for practicing bits you've just read too, which is something a book lacks!

My OH is a web designer and he says as long as you want a simple website & just want to do this for a hobby, wordpress is the way to go

However, he says if you're more interested in learning properly & doing more 'professional' things, he'd suggest learning basic code such as CSS & HTML & using W3Schools.com to teach yourself the basics because Wordpress can be a bit restrictive

(Just a disclaimer but I can't code anything more than the basics so all this info is straight from my OH! )

I dunno if this is okay to say (Mods can remove if necessary!) but my OH is a web designer, saw your post and wanted me to 'put in a good word for him'

Haha it'll get there! It's one of those things where you have to keep playing and building to get it to look good. I'm sure you'll get there eventually!

I think that if you want to make it look nice you need to know more than just <p> and <img> hehe.
WordPress is easy, you can try it for free and even with the free version you get lots of variety. It's not expensive either if you find that you like it and want to upgrade to the full version. If I was a person that needed a page and didn't wanna spend a fortune on a web designer I'd definitely give it a go.
