Baby Bird

A couple came in to work tonight not long before we closed. They'd found a wee baby bird in the road and had no idea what to do with it with the vets and rescue centres etc all being closed.
Poor girl who brought him in was panicking bless her, so I offered to take the little guy home and give him a fighting chance.

We think he's a chaffinch. Doesn't look too young (couple weeks old maybe?) and is plenty strong so hopefully he can make it!
I've named him Orinoco, wish us luck!

I've found a couple round here over the past few weeks, one sat on my front door handle and another on the pavement, they were fully fledged, like Orinoco, and I put the one on the pavement on a wall where it ran into a hedge, the one on my front door handle I got to sit on the trowel and then it flew under its own steam onto the fence and was gone next minute I looked. I would have put it in a safe place near to where I found it, because the parents will be about. They'll be doing their maiden flights at the moment.

Aww what a cutie! But I think he might be big enough to survive in the wild. He might have landed in the street by accident and the parents didn't dare approach because of the people around. I'd put him outside near where he was found and observe from a distance. The parents should arrive and take over, if not he might need your help. But as he seems to have most his feathers, he wouldn't have dropped out of a nest, it's more likely that he's been starting to fly and just hasn't got the coordination yet.

Oh, I just read what TW said and agree with that.

I don't know anything about birds but that tuft of hair on the top of its head is so cute. Love the name too. All the best

How is Orinoco doing Erin ?

I was so upset the other day when a Lesser spotted woodpecker hit the window and sadly died there was nothing I could do...

I do hope you manage to raise Orinoco..
