I've never owned a dog who reacted aggressively or defensively to a hug. As a matter of fact I've taught my Zen to give hugs as a cute trick. She is actually the one who gave me the idea to do it. She jumped on me when I was sitting on the floor had a paw on each shoulder and snuggled her head into my neck. She is the sweetest! So now when you ask for a hug you get one!
Although my dogs have all accepted hugs from me and my family. I have always advised my kids and others its best not to hug or get in a dogs face until they are familiar with the dog and vice versa. I do that cause of reading and being told that its not proper dog behavior lol!
I guess its best to play it safe with any dog until you know what's acceptable and unacceptable with each as an individual.

I think dogs must be individuals in their desire for very close contact. I have had Eddie from four and a half months. He did have a troubled start, and though he loves to be tickled and stroked, he has never liked to be cuddled. Even nine years later, will still squirm away to avoid a cuddle.
On the other hand, Merry was six years old when she came to us. She had a happy life in a good kennel, but had never lived as a housepet. She loves to cuddle, and will push herself against you to make a really close contact, (lovely!). It seems as if dogs will naturally either avoid, tolerate, or enjoy close physical contact from humans, and I think we should allow them to have that choice.

About 20 pages later the author says that dogs are different, and some like being handled.

Why on earth didn't she say that upfront?!
