It may be me having a blonde moment! Isn't Alfie a spaniel (or have i got it wrong again ?) and Daisy a Beagle? The X of those might be span-gles (as in "Star-spangled Banner", or the sweeties they probably don't make any more - they were coloured square fruity lumps of boiled sugar)
