Carpal joints ("wrist" area)

For a while now, Millie has been going of lame, intimately on her front right leg.

Sometimes it is very severe, to the point she is hopping on 3 legs, others its hardly noticeable, then I think I am imagining it.

When its severe, I think, a trip the vets next day, but then she is fine and shows no sign of lameness

So have been thinking, she must have strained it, twisted something, and so on...

Yesterday, she went for her normal walk, came back, all fine, settled down for a nap, then at lunch time she got up to go for a potty break, and was hobbling on 3 legs, she would hardly put any weight on her leg at all, watched her through out the day and it gradually get slightly better, but still painful enough for her to favour her leg.

Had a good look at the leg , and noticed she has a swelling around the "wrist joint" (not noticed this before) its not massive, but I can see it, its not tissue or fluid damage, but "bone" the bone around the joint looks calcified

Now I am panicking, or trying not to, hopefully its just a bit of arthritis, set in "would you see calcification in the joint for that"??

I am not going to think about the worst scenario, (am trying) but my friend went through this with her girl a few yrs back, and the outcome was not good,

Anyway , I will be calling to get an appointment with my vet tomorrow, and have him look at her, hopefully he will xray her joint and rule out what my worse fears are.

P.S.. she has gone for a gentle walk with hubby this morn, he will keep her on lead (till we know what we are dealing with) , she seems fine this morning, just a slight favouring of the leg, but nothing else.

Will keep you posted, when I knwo more,

Fingers crossed, its nothing to worry over!

Good luck.

I asked about the injections for Celt but if there is no cartilage around it doesn't help.

Hopefully they can suggest something for her.

Id say arthritis, you would certainly see some swelling for that. the fact it gets better over time also suggests that, anything else would remain the same all the time, with arthritis many things dictate how lame they are. Good luck, I hope that its nothing more than that.

Hoping it is something simple that can be managed. They do worry us don't though.

I had Fudge at the vets last weeks with intermittent lameness, she is on complete rest, metacam and a return visit in a couple of weeks......He suggested cruciate problems which has filled me with horror. There was no swelling though like you have described and is in her ear leg.....

I will check back to see what he has said......

Anytime I see a hard bone-y swelling over a joint, especially in a larger breed dog, I think osteosarcoma.

What I don't understand is you say you can "see" the calcifications? Have you had the leg xrayed?

I would get it checked by a vet. If its osteosarcoma then the faster you act the better.

So do I, but until we see the vet (on Friday) I will not think down the road.

When I say I can see "calcification" what I mean is that I can see "joint swelling" from the outside, rather like you can see arthritic " malformed joints on humans,,i.e finger joints, My mother has arthritic fingers, her joints are all calcified!

The question is, whats causing the malformation.

When I see my vet, we will go from there, regarding xrays.

Update on Millie

She had x rays on her front right leg and back yesterday (back a separate issue) she also had a good dental, and had all the epulis removed from her gums, along with two teeth (front ones, so we knwo what she wants for xmas)

Anyway getting back to the x rays...will start with her back.

She has as we have suspected for a while now, spondylosis, not a lot we can do for that other than pain relief when and if. she has been having a few spasmodic episodes of pain in her back, Will thinks the fused vertebrae may be pinching a nerve .

The lameness is slightly more serious, she has a chip of bone (from the wrist joint) floating around, which is giving her the intermittent lameness.

Will (my vet) is seeking a second opinion from an orthopedic surgeon to see what to do next.

The options are we leave it and hopefully let it settle on its own..

Or operate to fix the fragment of bone back on to the joint

I am inclined for now to leave well alone and see how it goes, if it stays intermittent, and does not get to the stage of more lameness than soundness, and we can control the pain with medication, It seems the better option.

We will wait and see what the specialist has to say , before we make any decisions.

Poor baby is feeling very sorry for herself at the moment,

She is on pain relief, for her gums, and is milking the sympathy as much as she can get.

Trying to get her to go outside to do a wee is another matter altogether, she went last evening when she was brought home, but has not been out again.

May have to slip her lead on later and walk her up the road to see if she will go.

Thanks for listening.
