I don't know what other want from their dog so I'll give my take.

I neither need nor want our dog to do special tricks. I want him to be companionable on our long walks and behave in company. Not a lot more. Little training involved. But quite a lot of learning from both sides and he is a pretty good learner.

Just as an example, he knows that a walk is on the cards when I'm puting my walking boots on - he flops down on the floor and waits. He has observed and learned.

If I need to put him on the lead/leash, which isn't often, "Max lead" and he waits. Just simple things like that learned through repetition I suppose.

He does get treats now and again but just regular dry dog food pieces.

My point, I suppose, is that your dog learns from you but, equally importantly, you need to observe and learn from your dog
