Dewi...for Baxter.

Here are some more of our old dog Dewi who died just over a year ago.

I used to walk dogs voluntarily at the Blue Cross and one day I saw this puppy. He was the runt of a litter of GSDXCOLLIE X WHIPPET LURCHERS that they had had in and he was the last one left. They had kennelled him with a lab cross puppy that had broken its leg and poor Dewi was getting hit with the plaster a lot. I took them out to play on the grass and I have never seen such a thinker of a puppy. While the other one was trying to leap all over the place Dewi sat turning his head back and forth watching what was going on before joining in.

I took him home with me just for a bit of socialisation and a rest from the other pup. He was terribly car sick and I called into my mum and dads on the way home with this tiny dribble drenched puppy. Mum fell in love with him but dad said they couldn't keep him. He had just taken early retirement and had things planned. So the next day I took him back to the Blue cross. Then dad phoned me the next day, Sunday, saing they thought they might have him after all. We drove back but they were closed so we posted a note in asking him to reserve him for us.

I took him to training classes as it wasn't something my dad really was in to, and that's how I became their assistant trainier and a member of the APDT. he was also fantastic at agility. He one so many non dog lovers over because he was a very gentle delicate boy. Even once he was fully grown people often thought he was a puppy GSD. I don't have many photos of him stored digitally but here are a few.

He was over ten in these photos and the last few of him I think he was 12 or 13.

What a truly wonderful dog! Made me all well up! They creep into our hearts without us even noticing don't they and then boom - we're all suckered up.

What a clever boy Dewi was and how wonderful he came into your life and guided you to the dog-training and dog-welfare journey. We owe them so much.

I lost Bronwyn on boxing day 2011 - we'd started grieving for her 3 months beforehand because she had became increasingly immobile but on the day it was so devastating and she was so poorly. I didn't think I would ever recover and sometimes now I panic when I can't picture her in my head. Her and I were devoted to each other.

Thank you.

It was easier with me when Dewi died in a way because my parents moved back to Wales with him in 2000 so I saw him much less. But in another way I still sometimes forget that he's gone. Sometimes when I call my mum I almost ask how he is, and I forget he's not going to be there when I visit them.

When they moved to Wales he accidentally missed out on his
Boosters. They're not sure how it happened but it seemed that during that time he picked something up and it lay dormant in him until three years later when he was ill with something else, and he ended up with hepatitis. It was really touch and go with him and he was on a drip at the vets daily for a week, but he recovered even though he was already an old chap.

Aw bless him, he was lovely. So very wise looking in those last couple of photos.

You must still miss him.

Hugs to him up at The Bridge and to you.
