Tatoo/chips

Inspired by another post I would like to know:

How many of you here know what the tatoo on or the chip in your dog means?

I know what the chip is, and how it works.
I know what the tattoo is, but wouldn't know what to do with it if I found a dog with one.
Same as I'd do with the chip? Take it to the vets and they would know?!

Hi

I have a record of my dog's microchip numbers, and they have the number of the Registry on collar tags. The numbers are also recorded with the Canine Association and the local council. Both have an identifying ear tattoo which can be traced to our vet, and the bitch has a desex tattoo as well.

Can someone explain *how* the tattoo works?
What do the numbers/letters mean? How would you go about 'using' the tattoo to trace owners etc?

If knowing what a chip means is knowing the number and what and what is does... then yes!

No idea about tattoos though... maybe someone will be along soon to explain

In our case the desex tattoo is a circle with a line through it. The identity tattoo is registered with the vet. The particular numbers are sent to the local councils, pounds, etc. Some breed clubs (eg GSD) have particular tattoos that are recognised nationwide.
