If the pup is only a day or two old, the mum may be scared of it.......my Daisy, with her first litter, took a couple of days to settle down, she growled snapped, wouldn't clean up after them............but by day 2/3 she was the perfect mum!

I hope she doesn't take the advise she was offered about hitting the dog, she has to talk and pet the mum, at the same time as getting the pup to feed! IF mum is this nasty then she shouldn't have let her have a litter!

Makes me so angry to hear things like that

agree CC ...... my Pippa had one litter and wasn't very impressed with the pups ...we didn't hit her on the head !!!!!!! but had to encourage her to feed them by using lots od patience with her in the box everytime a pup got near to feed she would move so we sat by the box and fussed her (took her mind of it ) whilst the pups fed...within 24hrs she was great with them

its a shame this has happened , sometimes even the best tempered dog can get confused on their first litter, its not unusual for a first time mom to turn on her pup although personally I would never breed off a bitch again if this is how she carried on, I'm a firm believer that a good brood bitch produces good brood bitches, this lady needs good sound advice, and also to be told to have her bitch spayed when this is the right time, in the meantime she should be feeding the pup herself with some form of puppy preparation, and keeping the pups warm (not boiling).
