Domestication NOT inbreeding may be to blame for canine diseases

Humans caused genetic changes in the animals as they became our pets

US researchers analysed complete genome sequences of wolves and dogs

Through domestication, humans may have unwittingly increased the number of harmful genetic changes in dogs compared with wolves

Domestication and breeding is more to blame, than recent inbreeding

Just musing, but I wonder if the creations of breeds actually involved a lot of in-breeding to achieve the desired result

Of course they did, that is why we now have the walking disasters of dogs that cannot breathe, can't move properly, suffer inherited illnesses and the like.
Its still very common (although hidden) for father/daughter matings, brother/sister matings, closely related matings in the guise of 'line breeding' and the KC lets it happen as well

so recent in-breeding just continues the trends that have brought us so many unhealthy dogs.

Let's hope we can reverse the trend by continuing the fight to get better breeding practices

Until the KC makes it mandatory for any puppies registered with them to have health tested parents then it will continue like this. I am sick of having conversations with owners that go ' well he's a family pet so he isn't health tested, but he's got a nice temperament so we thought we would breed from him'

Swedish-like laws on dog breeding is the only thing really that is 'working'. Make breeders jointly liable for pups - that would weed out the bad-uns...

I also like their stance on COE, their KC does not allow anything over 8%, also if your dog strays more than a couple of times (hefty fines both times incidentally) the third time you don't get your dog back

This is understandable for certain genetic diseases which are widespread in the dog population across many breeds.
