Need Some Serious Input

Someone put in an adoption application for Karitsa. It sounds perfect for her except they live in a really big and busy city. They have another dog, which Karitsa would love, and they are very active during the winter which Karitsa would also love. They have a dog walker come everyday of the work week and they go camping and such in the summer. They have been doing a lot of research on her breed and they feel she would be a good match. Nice that they are doing the research.

It sounds like a really good home for her, but city life??Not sure if that is really ideal for her. I think she would do better somewhere where she will have more room to run free off-leash. This is the only thing holding me back.

What are your thoughts??

I think I agree with your hesitation and why it is holding you back. I wish you could keep her but I know that you are only fostering her - but city life? I do not think so for Karitsa, who needs to have room to run free off-leash.

Tough one.Sound like great people though, dream come true for them really wouldn't it?Totally understand you want the absolute best for her.Might not be perfection but I reckon it'd still be a really great home.Even in cities there are spaces available for off leash or if not normally a short spin takes you to some sort of open space...no? Camping etc?...wow,not all dogs get the opportunity to have that kind of life
I'd say,go with your gut, especially at the meet up,she'll tell you if its the right decision I think....let us know what you decide...good luck

I think I agree with Lacey.
What dog do they already have? How big is the property they live in? Do they have any garden?

They have done a lot of research, sounds like they are experienced dog owners.
I think that Karitsa will be loved and well looked after and I'm sure will settle quite quickly.
Good luck and keep us informed.

Could she maybe go and stay for a long weekend a couple of times to see how she reacts to the change in her life, rather than drop her straight into it. Agree with the others, is there a place or places they could go for offlead exercise maybe. Where does the dogwalker take them etc

A few questions about walks and exercise should put your mind at rest. Big cities don't always equate to sedentary dog walking - many city dogs actually get more exercise than country dogs. It really comes down to the owners and how much effort they are likely to put in

You're only going to disregard any advice I give, but I'll post nonetheless. I have a 90 lb young dog and am 20 miles away from Atlanta, one of the busiest and most major cities in America. I always say I live in Atlanta, because even though technically, I don't, I'm RIGHT near it so I say it.

There is nothing wrong with my house, and my Nigredo has plenty of off leash run time in my yard every single day. As much as any dog could need or want, I could easily give it to the dog here. The dog would need great recall, which Nigredo does but it works out super well for me.

Being in or near a city doesn't mean that the dog won't get proper exercise. The location of a dog doesn't have to match perfectly to have a good life. I didn't hear you say they lived in a TINY apartment or anything that seems kind of horrid right off the bat, so I don't think there is a huge issue.

I used to foster, and I wish I could again. But Jade is an indoor dog now and her reactions to dogs come in varying degrees of hate, so I can't. I actually think if they are devoted to the dog, then it'll be a fine place for her regardless of where they live because it's possible to give a dog enough exercise in a city, EVEN if they dog doesn't get off lead time.

I don't know the situation but where we live would probably be considered city. But there are many parks and fenced tennis courts and skating areas that are like huge playpens for our dogs. Perfect for fetch and off leash running. You don't need woodlands to get enough exercise

All I can say is that I've lived mostly country or very small city life, but there was a time when I lived in a huge city, too. My dogs go where I go and I have always managed to keep them healthy and happy and at the time I had huge dogs. It takes a little effort, but dog people are usually willing to that extra mile for their dog. I would say it depends on the people adopting her. Dog walkers in a large city are great, but are they willing to take her out to run every weekend? Also the dog walkers usually are taking them to relieve selves. Not trot a mile for exercise.

Bearing in my mind the breeding I would say city life should be ok ... Provided the dog has plenty of off lead exercise I don't think it would be too much of a problem. Being with the family and not left alone for hours I would think would be far more of an issue with this type of dog. Tawney's suggestion is a good one.
