My elderly dog is lethargic and has poor appetite (updat @ post 26)

Hi, I have Darcy who is a 12 1/2 year old Rottweiler. She is generally in good health, arthritis but has Loxicam for this. She's had this for a few years now, only a low dose. She's also incontinent but has Propalin, probably for at least a year. She has been a bit more incontinent lately but I give her a dose just before bed so no accidents for a few weeks... She is underweight but again has been for a while which has obviously helped the arthritis. The last 2 days she has been reluctant to eat so I've handfed her a biscuit at a time and she has eaten these. She will eat shapes etc happily. She seems quite lethargic but keen to go on a walk but easily tires for the last week. Not unexpected for her age but last week she seemed more energetic. She's drinking a lot but has for a while. I'm concerned this could be her kidneys. She had an elderly blood test about a year ago and everything was good. Anyway should we go to the vet or should I try more interesting food. If it is her kidneys can anything be done? I will take her but I'm just worried. Any thoughts gratefully accepted.

Hello Cuffs , I would certainly go to the vet for a health check, there could be a couple of things going on here.
If you can get a sample of urine to take with you that would be good.

Try not to worry if you can

Thanks. We're going tomorrow at 8.30 and I'll take a urine sample with me. Will post what happens.

Hi All,

Thanks for Darcy's good wishes, they must have helped. We live to fight another day. Her urine is diluted (10.14)but no glucose. I've got to measure how much she's drinking and we are going again next Friday morning for another urine test and if still dilute and not just a blip she'll have a blood test. She looked a lot livelier last night and actually ate her dinner (albeit a very small one) without coaxing so fingers crossed. I just want her until she's at least 60....

Thanks

Catherine
