I have never lifted a hand in anger to my dog, I hope I never will.
I try to use my brain to educate the dog as to what is acceptable behaviour.
I ought to be able to out think her!

whats the difference in 'smacking'(a tap on the bum) to tell a dog off and playing roughly with them (probbly harsher than a smack)

what would their mothers do - bark at them?? no, millie got picked up and flung accross theroom on severall occasions by her mum - hence why she was wiht me at ashade under 6 weeks....

point being, i have nothing against smacking,, its not like beating - which im completely against,,

I've seen people pat their dogs harder than some people smack!
I don't think violence works but if a dog has got to the state that they are no longer able to respond how would you interrupt that behaviour?
I think most of us here would and some have said they would, use violence towards another dog if their dog was being attacked so to say you'd never hit any dog I don't believe you as I think the circumstances would have to come into play. If I was being attacked by a dog trust me I'd use whatever means I could to stop it.

Animals know when they are naughty.
Sofar, voice and body language has been enough with Gira.

Would I smack her? Ive been tempted

The idea behind a smack is to create pain, discomfort or shock in the animal and this must never be done in anger.(Which makes it very hard to do when really needed)

I have done it with the horses.

Will I smack Gira? If I were a good trainer/teacher I wouldnt have to. I'm good with horses, but Gira proves me to be below average with dogs. I'm too nice to her.

And there is no difference between a smack and an e-collar

I've never seen the point of smacking my dogs to be honest, it would worry me that the dog would become hand shy. I find my voice is enough, although I don't shout I tend to go lower which does the trick.
Kids, now that's another thing, I could smack my teenage son senseless sometimes! Managed not to do it so far, great tip from a previous poster

It depends on the dog, and the breed
but some dogs wont react to shouting, In my experience, I have shouted till i am hoarse, with my old dog, and it never works, so I have had to smack him on the nose or bum, to make him realise he was wrong, otherwise he wouldnt have lived past his first birthday,
With my bitches, much much easier to discipline. If I shout or even shake my finger , they know they have done wrong, so smacking them isnt necessary,
Certainly dont agree with abusing any animal though, no way

I've only got to raise my voice, no smacking needed. Mind you when I do raise the voice, I have not only dogs head for their beds ...I have a husband and 3 kids that are out the door quick smart too.

Not a big fan of the collars either.

Don't misunderstand. I would never smack Gira with my hands.

Do you think the shock collar has the same effect as a smack i.e fright, touch,? a smack would probably sting for longer.
