Dogs see off polar bear

A hungry polar bear, looking to forage for food in rubbish bins at a weather station in Siberia, found itself confronted by three dogs who, by barking and growling, refused to allow the bear to come any closer.

The weather station is at Bely Island, off the tip of the Yamal Peninsula, Siberia and polar bears are frequent visitors. The station is manned by four workers but there were other visitors that day, including Russian Orthodox Priests who had come to consecrate the island's memorial stone. They reported seeing the bear digging into rubbish and described how it started moving towards them when they got out of the helicopter.

At this point, the dogs came to protect the Priests from the bear, who appeared to give up on its advance and lie down when a signal pistol was fired. The Priests said that as they flew from the island, the bear was still in place, watching them with “sad eyes”.
