Rookie police dogs start training

South Wales Police Dog School has welcomed five puppies to their unit. The new recruits are 13-week-old Springer Spaniels Woody, PJ, Norman, Patsy and Buddy. Part of the next generation of police dogs, they will spend the next 12 months in training before taking on their roles as drugs dogs.

The puppies are joining a busy and heavily utilised unit. There are currently 73 fully operational dogs, 31 of which are specialist search dogs. Some older dogs will retire after the 2012 Olympics and will be replaced by the fully trained Springer Spaniels.

Drugs dogs are also trained to detect cash, firearm components and ammunition and SWP Dog Section Inspector Mark Horbrough reports that the puppies are settling in well and already showing great promise.
