Thyroid Problems in Dogs and a New Vaccine Protocol 9 June Manchester

Jean Dodds

UNDERACTIVE THYROID PROBLEMS

WHAT VACCINE DOES MY DOG NEED AND HOW OFTEN

http://www.itsfortheanimals.com/DODDS-RESUME.HTM

The venue for the 2012 APDT Lecture Series is the Hilton Manchester Airport Hotel which has excellent conference facilities and is located near Manchester Airport.

This year we are very fortunate to have Dr. Jean Dodds present a day on Hypothyroidism and Vaccine Issues. This will be a day not to be missed for anyone working with dogs in training, behaviour and veterinary practice.

Those of us who have been affected by Hypothyroidism in our dogs know it is very difficult to find a UK vet who is attuned to this all to common problem, and even more difficult to get blood work done to the detail that is needed to make a proper diagnosis.

Dr. Dodds is a leading expert in the testing and diagnosis of thyroid problems. She has also been a strong campaigner to change the vaccination protocol in the US and had been instrumental in achieving changes in revaccination schedules.

Come join us for an interesting and informative day which will give you much to think about and new ideas with which to go forward into the dog training world.

We urge to you make sure your local veterinary practice knows about this presentation and hope to reach as many vets and vet nurses as possible.

Thyroid Disease

Hypothyroidism is the most common endocrine disorder of dogs, and up to 80% of cases result from an autoimmune disease that progressively destroys the thyroid gland (autoimmune thyroiditis). Once more than 75% of the gland is destroyed by this process, classical clinical signs of hypothyroidism appear. Because the condition is heritable, it has significant genetic implications for breeding stock. Accurate diagnosis of the early stages of autoimmune thyroiditis offers important genetic and clinical options for prompt intervention and case management. However, it is often difficult to make a definitive diagnosis.

Vaccine Issues

Modern vaccine technology has permitted us to protect companion animals effectively against serious infectious diseases. However, the challenge to produce effective and safe vaccines for the prevalent infectious diseases of animals has become increasingly difficult. In veterinary medicine, evidence implicating vaccines in triggering immune-mediated and other chronic disorders (vaccinosis) is compelling. While some of these problems have been traced to contaminated or poorly attenuated batches of vaccine that revert to virulence, others apparently reflect the hosts genetic predisposition to react adversely upon receiving the single (monovalent) or multiple antigen “combo” (polyvalent) products given routinely to animals. Animals of certain susceptible breeds or families appear to be at increased risk for severe and lingering adverse reactions to vaccines.

Nutrition

Wholesome nutrition is key to maintaining healthy immune function and resistance to disease. Discussion will focus on the basic ingredients and trace vitamins, minerals, and immune-balancing nutrients that promote healthy endocrine and immune function as they apply to health and disease. The exciting new field of nutrigenomics is an emerging science that studies the molecular relationships between nutrition and the response of genes in promoting health. Different diets elicit different patterns of gene and protein expression as well as metabolite production; these are termed molecular dietary signatures.
New diagnostics for detecting food sensitivities and intolerance are now available using saliva, instead of serum or faeces.

Pity she wouldn't come over here, after having a hypothryoid dog, I would find that part of her talk very interesting

I wish I wasn't working or could even afford to go as after losing 2 dogs to autoimmune problems and a 3rd suspected and now I have a 4th who had allergy problems after her booster which makes me suspicious I am very interested in her work.
