Hello Garry what does the vet say?

Could this be a traumatic injury . Is your dog left alone for long periods, could he have been scratching at something and flayed his nails .

Other than that there are a number of conditions which can affect the nail . Something else to consider a mineral deficiency of some kind.

Ouch! Looks painful :O

I believe I've read somewhere that brittle claws could be a sign of an underlying condition. It might be worth having some blood tests done just to check?

It's hard to believe it's not tender because the quick is exposed. It also looks as though his nails are too long and could do with clipping. My dog did a similar thing last week tore the nail sheath off exposing the quick and limped for a couple of days after. If it's happened to more than one nail, sorry I can't tell from the pictures, then I think you need to see a vet to see if the dog has a condition causing the nails to be brittle.

Only time I've had any problem like that with a dog was when my GSD had to go into kennels for 3 nights. She almost pulled all her own claws out trying to break down the wire fencing.

Just one point your photos on imgur are dated Jan 2010?

Looks very much to me like your dog has SLO (symmetrical lupoid onychodystrophy).
This is a very painfull Auto Immune condition where the body attacks the nails and he will need to get started on Meds and antibiotics the meds he will be on for life.
Any questions please ask my dog's had this for 2 and half years now but best get him to a vet.

Just read your last post. He should never have boosters again as the body is fighting itself as it is and putting anything into it won't help.

While you were at the vet and them telling you he needed vitamins you should have asked for details of what ones.

Can't you phone them? I'm surprised any vet has just left them in the state they are in now.

Also surprised you say it is a pit bull as I understood them to be banned in UK? Do you have dispensation to keep it?
