My understanding is that there isn't an awful lot understood on the inheritance of cryptorchidism, except that it probably polygenic and may be multifactorial. There is though little doubt that many cases are genetic in origin, and as Mini says, male dogs can definitely carry the genes for it. There have been many cases of well known stud dogs regularly producing affected offspring.

I think thandi may have a point in that a bitch sibling of an affected may be more likely to carry more of the defect genes than an entire male sibling, because the bitch would hide the expression of multiple defect genes that would express in a male as affected.

This is not though a sex linked trait, it is sex limited.
